Wafer style butterfly valves are designed to maintain a seal against bi-directional pressure differential to prevent backflow in unidirectional systems. It accomplishes this with a flat valve face and tightly fitting seal on the upstream and downstream sides of the valve. Though intended for fully open or fully closed operations, wafer style butterfly valves may be used for throttling.
